Conservation Students working hard clearing the Sluices in the ancient water meadows; winter 2012.

These meadows are regionally important. There were active water meadows operating in the Wey Valley until 1920.  On the farm, ‘Bumpy Field’ boosts some of the best historic features of ridge & furrow, sluices and cart bridges that are still intact.  You can learn all about this interesting way of farming & go back in time with James on Mellow farm to see the meadows for yourself.

One of the cleared 6 stone sluices shows the large stone slabs that would have protected the sluices from the horse cart wheels and horses hooves.
