Beech trees on Mellow Farm

The Beech Tree Fagus sylvatica is a deciduous tree and arrived in England about 4000 BC; 2000 years after the English Channel formed after the ice ages. It may have been introduced by Stone age man as he liked the nuts as a food source. The roots are very shallow and can survive on thin soils; you may find many species of fungi under a beech tree. It makes beautiful furniture and creates a lot of shade in the woodland.
